Black Series Review: Moloch and Count Dooku
This week I received both the Star Wars Black Series Count Dooku and the Black Series Moloch from Solo. Both figures are visually great and I'm super happy to have gotten both. Lets start with Moloch, and as before we'll start with the negatives.
Moloch is a pretty great figure. However, his articulation leaves a lot to be desired. Given that he's a worm man, he has no articulation below the waist. His head is also encased in a giant bulb, and can't swivel at all. He's visually appealing, but he's more of a statue then an actual figure. I can't really recommend buying him at full price. I got him half off. Most stores I think are clearencing him now, so you'll probably be able to get a good deal if you like what you see.
Other then the limited articulation, whats there is great. The joints are smoother and not sticky, but not overly loose either. They even went out of their way to articulate the face beneath the mask to make up for the lack of head articulation. The highest point of this figure is the mask, which is awesome, and simulates the films retractable faceplate by a detachable one which clicks into the bottom mouth piece. The mask is just a really elegant accessory that makes this figure. The gun is pretty interesting too, and is a design we haven't seen before.
Lastly, just the visual appeal of the figure is fantastic. Moloch has a cool character design, and that design is faithfully recreated here to great effect.
Now for the main event, Count Dooku. This is an amazing figure. I have very few complaints. The shoulders look a little weird if you remove the cape (which you really shouldn't do anyway) and the "moving lightsaber" blade accessory is a little pointless. Thats really my only complaint.
This review might get a little gushy, so prepare yourself. First, the face sculpt is spectacular. It perfectly captures Christopher Lee's appearance, and the severe air he brought to the portrayal of Dooku. The new face printing technology they have is amazing, but this figure is some of the best use of it since Tarkin.
The cape is similarly phenomenal. Possibly one of the best soft good's capes in the line. It sits well on his shoulders, and even lays on the back of his neck like the cape does in the actual film. The one tiny thing is that it doesnt have the padded shoulders that he has in the films, but theres not any realistic way to simulate that on an action figure without making it hard. And soft goods capes with plastic shoulders kind of suck.
The joints are wonderful and have a wide range of articulation which give him a variety of great poses. The lightsaber is a beautiful recreation and looks good in his hand or on his belt. There's honestly nothing bad about this figure. He's fantastic. I heavily encourage you to buy him if he's available at any reasonable price.
Moloch isn't perfect, but enjoyable as a visual piece. Dooku for his part is basically perfect. Both are wonderful and worthy additions to my collection.
